What is Overcall in Poker?

« View All Poker Terms

Overcall can mean:

1. To call a bet or raise after other players have done the same. For example, if the Hijack raises, the button calls and you call as well in the big blind, you’re overcalling. You have to be calling against at least two players for it to qualify as an overcall; a call against as single player is referred to as simply a call.

2. Overcalling can also refer to calling more often than you theoretically should in a certain spot. “I’m overcalling against Tom on the river because he bluffs so much.”
