Here are the questions, answers, and explanations from our delay c-bet quiz.

Question #1

✅ Check

🔲 Bet

Our hand isn’t quite strong enough to bet twice for value, nor is it particularly vulnerable to being outdrawn, so we are better off checking and seeing a free river. This gives our opponent the chance to bluff on the river or hit a worse hand with which he can call a bet.

Flop note: Betting small on the flop with this hand is a valid strategy (the solver mixes betting and checking).

Question #2

✅ Check

🔲 Bet

Our hand is not strong enough to value bet, but it does have showdown value. We can check it back and look to either check down on bad river cards or go for a thin value bet on good river cards.

Flop note: Betting on the flop with this hand is a valid and arguably preferred strategy to checking (the solver mostly bets and mixes in checks).

Question #3

🔲 Check

✅ Bet

Once we check the flop, betting on the turn is absolutely mandatory so we can try to extract two streets of value by the river.

Flop note: Slow-playing on the flop with such an invulnerable hand is something that solvers recommend doing from time to time. In this case, 88 is a bet on the flop 95% of the time according to solvers. If you're playing against a very aggressive player, mixing in a check back sometimes to trap them can be an effective adjustment.

Question #4

✅ Check

🔲 Bet

Even though we now have an open-ender, our hand should still be checked back for a few reasons:

  • Checking keeps dominated Ax in the hand.
  • Checking with this straight draw protects our check back range because we'll have more straights in our range when the river is a Q or 7.
  • Ace-Ten high still has a decent amount showdown value, and betting basically throws away that showdown value by forcing folds from the hands that we beat.

Question #5

🔲 Check

✅ Bet

Checking on the flop with a weak gutshot on such a dynamic board is a fine play. Once we get to the turn, we have an easy bluff with this hand because it has no showdown value and a reasonable number of outs to improve.

Question #6

🔲 Check

✅ Bet

After an easy flop check back, we can bet with this hand and expect to fold out A-high and stronger K-high. Plus, it blocks some calling hands (96s, 97, possibly J9).

Question #7

🔲 Check

✅ Bet

Once we check back with our top pair and get a blank turn, it's time to start value betting. If he calls on the turn and the river card isn't too scary, we can go for another bet then.

Flop note: It may seem counter-intuitive, but this hand is checked back at a high frequency on the flop by solvers. Stronger top pairs like A7 and K7 are mostly bets.

Question #8

✅ Check

🔲 Bet

We have a strong hand given the action, but it's not quite good enough to go for two streets of value. The better play is to check and go for value on the river.

Flop note: This flop warrants a high frequency betting strategy according to solvers, including Q7 at a decent frequency.

Question #9

🔲 Check

✅ Bet

Once we check on the flop, this is an amazing hand with which to overbet on the turn and barrel on the river. This amount of pressure will likely force our opponent to fold 6x, 9x, Qx and possibly even Ax by the river.

We can make this play with an underpair because we have very few other bluffing candidates in our range. As a result, we have to get creative with our hand selection. Our lack of bluffing candidates is one reason a bluff will be so effective in this spot --- a thinking opponent will realize how few bluffs we can have and make big folds.

Flop note: Betting on the flop with this hand is the preferred strategy (the solver bets 75% and checks 25%).

Question #10

🔲 Check

✅ Bet

Our hand is very strong given the action. It’s safe to bet on both the flop and turn and expect to get called by a worse hand more than half the time.

Flop note: Betting on the flop with this hand is a valid strategy (the solver mixes bet and check).
