What is Burn in Poker?

The Burn or Burn Card is the top card of the deck that is placed into the muck or beneath the pot by the dealer before dealing the flop, turn, or river.

After all pre-flop action is complete, the dealer must always (except in rare instances) burn the top card of the deck by placing it facedown on the table before dealing the flop. Subsequent burns must be completed before dealing the turn and the river.
