Jason Mercier’s Memorable Hands
The following hand comes from Mercier’s breakthrough win, way back in 2008. Mercier sat at the final table of the EPT Sanremo €5,000 Main Event as an unknown player when this pot took place:
Four players remain in the tournament when Mercier opens to 80,000 from the cutoff with 9♠ 5♥. Erik Koskas calls in the big blind with T♥ 3♠.
Koskas checks in the dark and the flop comes 5♣ J♥ 6♦. Mercier checks back, bringing the 8♣ on the turn. Koskas overbets, putting 220,000 into the 187,000 pot with ten-high and no draw. Mercier quickly calls.
The river comes 8♥, and Koskas goes all in, betting 699,000 into the 627,000 pot. After several moments in the tank, Mercier calls, and Koskas is forced to show the failed bluff attempt.
The hand ended the tournament run for Koskas and eventually led to Mercier’s first major tournament win. Mercier went on to win the EPT Sanremo Main Event for a $1,372,893 payday.
Mercier Makes Another Hero Call
Mercier’s penchant for making big-time final table hero calls came up again at the North American Poker Tour Mohegan Sun stop in 2010. The following hand pits Mercier against Samuel Stein in the $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em Bounty Shootout (hand begins at 10:21).
Mercier and Stein are heads-up for the tournament title when Mercier opens to 7,500 with 4♠ 3♣. Stein makes the call with J♠ T♣ .
The flop comes 2♥ 9♦ 4♥, Stein checks, Mercier bets 16,000, and Stein check-raised to 25,500. Mercier makes a quick call.
The turn comes 8♥, and Stein bets 38,000 with his open-ended straight draw. Mercier, with just third pair, makes the call again.
The river brings the K♣, and Stein fires a third bullet for 63,500. An anguished Mercier makes the call, and in this case, his bluff catch with just a pair of fours was correct.
Mercier went on to win the tournament, collecting a $475,000 payday in the process.
Jason Mercier’s Rapid Rise
Mercier appeared on the live tournament scene seemingly out of nowhere in 2008. His win as a 21-year-old at the 2008 EPT Sanremo Main Event marks his first recorded tournament result in the Hendon Mob database.
Many other poker players work their way up through smaller live tournament stakes before reaching the big time, but Mercier jumped right into stardom with that $1,372,893 win. He followed up with another win in October 2008 at the EPT London High Roller for a $944,847 score.
Mercier won his first of five eventual World Series of Poker bracelets in 2009. He took down a $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha event at the 2009 WSOP, adding a $237,462 score to his resume.

The early success achieved by Mercier evolved into sustained excellence over the course of a decade. Mercier consistently ranked as one of the best tournament players in the world from 2008-2017.
Mercier stands as one of only 19 players to reach No. 1 in the Global Poker Index player rankings. He holds the all-time record for most weeks at No. 1, spending 84 weeks at the top from 2011-2015. He last topped the GPI rankings for the week of Sept. 23, 2015.
From 2008-2015, Mercier earned $15,888,117 in tournament cashes, according to Hendon Mob. His top four career cashes all came in that time period.

Historic Run at the 2016 World Series of Poker
Mercier’s five WSOP bracelet wins come across multiple different poker variants. He’s won bracelet events in Pot-Limit Omaha, No-Limit Hold’em, No-Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball, and H.O.R.S.E. Perhaps his most prestigious WSOP win came in the 2016 $10,000 H.O.R.S.E event, which Mercier took down for a $273,335 payout.
Mercier’s 2016 WSOP run included two bracelet wins, a runner-up finish in the $10,000 Razz Championship, and an eighth-place finish in the $10,000 Hi-Low Split 8 or Better Championship. Mercier cashed 11 times at the series that year and took home the 2016 World Series of Poker Player of the Year award.
Topping it off, Mercier proposed to his then-girlfriend Natasha Barbour at the WSOP that year. Barbour said yes, and after Mercier significantly reduced his poker tournament playing schedule.
Leaving PokerStars and Family Life
PokerStars added Mercier to its roster of sponsored Team Pros in 2009. Mericer held that position until January 2018, when he stepped away from poker to focus on family life. Mercier made an announcement in January 2018 that stated he was leaving the PokerStars team.
Mercier was father to a three-month-old son, Marco, by then, and cited his family commitments as the primary reason for stepping away from his PokerStars role.
“The conversation about my contract was short and sweet,” Mercier wrote in the announcement. “There were no hard feelings, and there never would or could be. I was a PokerStars Pro for eight and a half wonderful years. I’m forever grateful that they took a chance on me when I was just a 22-year-old kid who had just captured his first gold bracelet in the summer of 2009.”
The Mercier’s now have two children, adding a second son, Matteo, to the fold in 2019.
Still just 34, Mercier makes sporadic appearances at major live tournaments and also plays the Bobby’s Room high-stakes cash games at the Bellagio poker room. His last major tournament score came in August 2019, with Mercier taking down a $50,000 Super High Roller event at the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood Poker Open for a $715,860 payday.
